Small Space, Smart Solutions: A 1950s Kitchen and Bath Transformation

This 1950s kitchen had run out of room to function. Wall cabinets sat beneath a low soffit under the home’s 8-foot ceilings, leaving almost no storage. With a stacked washer and dryer in the space, there was no pantry, no trash storage, and no cabinetry above the fridge or laundry unit. Larger appliances had been relegated to the detached garage, a rough setup through Chicago winters.

We redesigned the layout to reach every inch. Custom cabinetry, a walnut island top, handmade subway tile, and oil rubbed bronze hardware brought full kitchen storage back into the home, no more garage trips. We also relocated the crawl space access hatch, previously hidden under the old refrigerator, to a nearby closet.

The adjoining bathroom needed the same thoughtfulness for its longtime residents. We removed the tub for a low-threshold walk-in shower with sturdy, attractive grab bars, raised the vanity to standard height with a vessel sink, and added a comfort-height toilet.

The result: a home that finally works the way its owners need it to.
